Senior SQL Server Performance Specialist (f/m/d)

We are looking for a Senior SQL Server Performance Specialist (f/m/d) to join our agile Scrum teams in Eschborn or fully remote. In this role, you will help optimize our microservice architecture, API products, and web portals for international parcel logistics. Your work will directly impact our global operations.

About the Role

You will optimize and troubleshoot SQL Server performance issues across multiple countries and environments.
You will collaborate with developers and architects to design high-performance database solutions for new features and applications.
You will lead and support database migrations from on-premises to cloud environments, ensuring optimal performance throughout the transition.
You will architect and implement performance improvements for both existing on-premises and cloud-based MS SQL Server environments.
You will work with advanced database technologies and cloud platforms (Azure SQL Database, AWS RDS) to deliver scalable solutions.
You will develop automated monitoring, alerting, and optimization solutions.
You will be part of an international, agile database team, mostly working remotely with colleagues from around the world.

What We're Looking For

A degree in computer science, information technology, or comparable training.
6+ years of experience as a SQL Server Performance Specialist, Database Developer, or Senior DBA (8+ years preferred).
Proficiency in SQL Server (versions 2012-2022) and performance optimization.

Expertise in query execution plans, indexing strategies, and performance troubleshooting.
Mastery of performance tuning tools (SSMS, Extended Events, Query Store, DMVs, wait statistics analysis).
Expert-level query optimization and index design.

Strong experience with SQL Server internals and architecture.

Knowledge of Database Engine internals (SQL OS, Relational Engine, Storage Engine).
Experience with memory management, transaction log optimization, and locking/deadlock resolution.
Understanding of schema design and table partitioning strategies.

Hands-on experience with High Availability solutions (Always On Availability Groups, clustering, replication).
Proficiency in advanced T-SQL development and PowerShell scripting.
Experience with cloud SQL Server performance optimization (Azure SQL Database, AWS RDS, or hybrid scenarios).
Familiarity with enterprise monitoring solutions (SolarWinds DPA, RedGate SQL Monitor, Quest Spotlight) and custom monitoring.
Knowledge of modern SQL Server features (Query Store, Intelligent Query Processing, Automatic tuning).
Experience with performance testing methodologies and data warehouse optimization is a plus.
Some experience with PostgreSQL is a plus, but not mandatory.
Strong ability to document findings and communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Very good English skills to understand and present complex database performance concepts.
