Job Description

Senior Staff Engineer - Cloud Economics

Join Reddit as a Senior Staff Engineer, where you'll take ownership of cloud resource management within our Ads Domain. You'll work closely with key stakeholders to create efficient systems that drive cost accountability and optimize our cloud infrastructure.

About the Role

The Ads Foundations organization is the technical backbone for Ads Monetization at scale. Your role will focus on:

  • Tech Evolution & Efficiency: Architecting systems that are both high-performing and financially sustainable.
  • Cloud Resources & Data Observability: Designing a "source of truth" for cloud spending and standardizing best practices across teams.
  • Cost of Revenue Engineering: Creating solutions to optimize costs, enabling teams to manage their PnL effectively.

What You'll Do

Technical Vision & Strategy

  • Define and drive the technical strategy for Cloud Resource management within Ads, ensuring cost accountability is integral to our systems.
  • Lead high-quality forecasting of cloud investments, designing data-driven models to validate technical ROI.
  • Implement a roadmap for Cost Observability 2.0, enhancing reporting with real-time spend attribution and automated anomaly detection.

Engineering & Tooling Leadership

  • Build internal platforms that enforce PnL accountability, delivering essential dashboards and governance tools for Ads teams.
  • Architect automated frameworks for validating cost estimates and forecasting, moving away from manual spreadsheets.

Scale & Optimization

  • Enhance observability by implementing deep telemetry in our cloud infrastructure, identifying inefficiencies for cost reduction.
  • Validate vendor and 3rd-party tool integration to maximize engineering value from our spending.

Cultural & Technical Stewardship

  • Set a standard for how engineering teams approach cost as a non-functional requirement, scaling these practices across domains.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Engineering leadership to translate cloud spending into actionable engineering tasks.

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, focusing on public cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure) and large-scale distributed systems.
  • Engineer-First Mindset: Proficient in coding (Go, Python, Java) to solve infrastructure challenges.
  • Deep Cloud Expertise: Mastery of Kubernetes, container orchestration, and cloud-native storage.
  • Operational Excellence: Experience building observability pipelines (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog).
  • Influential Leader: Ability to drive clarity and convince others on cost efficiency through technical and business value.

Nice to Have

  • Experience building custom FinOps tooling or internal developer platforms.
  • Background in performance engineering or capacity planning for high-traffic ad tech environments.
  • Contributions to open-source projects related to cloud efficiency or observability.

What We Offer

  • Comprehensive Healthcare Benefits and Income Replacement Programs
